CATALOGUE TEXT
Revolutions are often heroic stories, feeding on the “dream of a thing” (Pier Paolo Pasolini). They have their heyday before the test of reality. The really important answers to Lenin’s famous question of what should be done can be found in the biography of a good revolutionary – wide open like a book, long before anyone ever thought to ask this question. Brecht’s song “In Praise of the Revolutionary” portrays a veritable model of this species: “If oppression grows many will be discouraged. But his courage grows. He organises his fight for wages, tea water and the power in the state.” Viewed in this light, a revolutionary is always a singular entity. But he also moves like a fish in the water, has universal traits. He will only be regarded as a revolutionary if he combines both.

Such human-superhuman stories of heroes and masses are told in the films of this programme: the interweaving of personal biography and political work and how one is informed by the other. Cinematic discourses shaped by a passionate Yes to their subject. Largely free of irony, but not always.
