Miracles of Reality

Miracles of Reality

“Rüsselsheim in the 1980s. A provincial backwater in the midst of a society that had moved on. The city was an ideal sounding board for creative ideas and every form of provocation.” Martin Kirchberger startled Rüsselsheim awake, organising interventions full of Fluxus charm. The “Chair in Extreme Situations” was born: “A chair a person in an asbestos suit is sitting on is set on fire and then extinguished by firemen on standby”, reads a note on a short film collection entitled “Miracles of Reality” by the Cinema Concetta group led by Kirchberger and others. Their attitude towards their own work: “Maybe it was all in vain, but we felt good about it.” Pseudo-documentary shorts are made and one of them is to be the step into the big film business: “Bunkerlow – Eine Kaffeefahrt in der Luft” (Bunkerlow – An Open Air Free Day Trip). A satirical narrative where the participants get to test the quality of bunkers by shelling them. But plane and crew crash during the shooting in December 1991. Thomas Frickel, who was a friend of Kirchberger, reanimates the Rüsselsheim group in his film while he traces the “wounds of reality”.
